CLUE Commercial Integration

Real-Time Underwriting Intelligence for a Mid-Size P&C Carrier

The Situation

A mid-size property and casualty carrier processing tens of thousands of commercial submissions annually had a problem that nobody wanted to say out loud: their underwriters were spending a significant portion of every working day doing something a system should have been doing for them.

Every new submission triggered a manual CLUE report request. The underwriter would pause their review, navigate to LexisNexis, pull the report, wait for it, download it, and then return to the submission. On a busy day, this happened dozens of times. The actual underwriting decision — the part that required human judgment — was being crowded out by data retrieval that required none.

The downstream effect was predictable. Quote turnaround times were slow. Submissions aged in the queue. Producers who needed fast answers were going elsewhere. The company was losing competitive business not on price but on speed.

What Changed

The team built a real-time integration between Guidewire PolicyCenter and LexisNexis using a REST API framework. When a submission reached the underwriting stage, the CLUE report was requested, retrieved, and surfaced inside the underwriter's existing workflow automatically.

No separate login. No manual pull. No waiting.

The integration was built to handle errors gracefully — if a report was unavailable or delayed, the underwriter was notified within the workflow rather than left wondering. The solution required no changes to how underwriters worked. It simply removed a step they should never have been doing.

Technology Used

Java | REST API | Guidewire Integration Framework

The Result

Manual underwriting effort dropped by 40%. The underwriting team did not shrink — the recovered capacity was redirected toward actual risk assessment, improving decision quality alongside throughput.Submission-to-quote turnaround improved measurably within the first quarter after go-live.

For the first time in years, the underwriting backlog was no longer the first agenda item at weekly operations meetings.

The bottleneck was never the underwriters. It was the process built around them.
